What you need to know: types of plastic finishes

TIME:2021-05-13 Share

Want to know what plastic finish is best for you? We first need to know what types of plastic finishes are there?

Plastic finishes are used by manufacturers to give the final appearance of the product and reduce the appearance of any blemishes or molding lines. These finishes are classified into grades classified by the Plastics Industry Association (SPI). SPI pointed out that plastic finishes are scattered in 12 different grades, from mirror gloss to dull matte. Generally speaking, these finishes can be divided into four categories:

1. Matte plastic finish
Matte and dark finishes are mainly used for die castings and thermoset parts. They are made of fine stone powder. It is foreseeable that the matte finishes are classified from C-1 to C-3.

2. Semi-gloss plastic finish
Created using different types of sandpaper, the semi-gloss finish is smooth, but not as shiny. B-1, B-2 and B-3 grades are polished from medium to medium to low. These finishes can be used on the exterior of products and parts that require a smoother finish.

3. Shiny plastic finish
This group consists of finishes A-1, A-2 and A-3. All are incredibly smooth and shiny, but A-1 is unique, it is a mirrored finish. These finishes are all obtained using diamond powder suspended in an oil solution. This incredible reflective surface is often used to make plastic mirrors or other optical parts.

4. Dark plastic finish
These surfaces are created using processes such as sandblasting and can result in satin to dark surfaces. These are the roughest and least polished grades and are usually used for internal parts or products that require such a finish. Sandblast a plastic car part. Plastic injection molding finishes are usually achieved through a molding process.

What plastic finish is best for you?
As with many choices made in the plastic injection molding process, the different elements used to create a product are best determined by the product's intended use.
